Wow, bombshell! Gonna download Mushihimesama right now! Finally, PS2/360 era Cave shmups hitting Switch, yesssssss!
Yeah it’s so cool to have them on the Switch now! Espgaluda II in particular is huge. I have all the PS2 ones, and they’re in glorious 240p too. Mushihime Futari would have been awesome as well. I’ve never had an Xbox system so I’ve never played all those 360 ports.
I hope we get Futari ported from the 360, incredible port from M2 with some of the best display options in a game ever, especially the shaders/filters. That really was ahead of its time for a 2000s release.
Wow, didn’t know about Mushi, awesome news!
Played a bit of Mushi on my TV and am about to try it in TATE on my Hori stand now. Game looks great but not seeing a scanline option so far, just a screen smoothing setting? Are scanlines under a different menu?
There are no scanline options in any of the Cave developed 360 ports which look to have been the source of these Switch versions.
But I kinda get why when there are redrawn sprites, the whole point of doing that is to get away from the original SD presentation and create something more suitable for HDTV’s, but they would have been a welcome inclusion in the games where you have the option for original sprites or where they didn’t redraw anything.
Thanks, that omission makes sense at least. Just to be clear, when you say this is using redrawn sprites do you mean the sprites have just been “cleaned up” for HD or these are actually newly designed visuals and it’s not using the PCB’s sprites at all? Did the PS2 use redrawn sprites? Sorry if the question/reply sounds like it’s worded oddly. Bottom line, how authentic are the visuals to the PCB?
Man, I love the Wide shot in Mushi, seems like it’s the best for racking up lots of nice and easy chunky combo chains on mobs of enemies.
This is my first time playing the game in years and I’m having an absolute blast, just got to the stage 3 boss on one credit, lost to him by a bit. Seems like stage 3 and beginning of stage 4 is the personal limit I need to break for single credit runs.
No but is 480i and uses the PS2’s bilinear filter so doesnt look great as you can imagine, everyone does a better job porting these games than Cave themselves!
As for this port everything but the background layer has been reworked to base resolution of 480p, so not authentic to the PCB but I still think they look good.
Some games like SDOJ or Daifukatsu updated the background too whilst others like the Pork/Pink Sweets double pack didn’t update anything, they weren’t at all consistent with what they updated or not.
From the clips I see on YouTube, it looks a lot better than the PS2 port at 480i does on a flat panel. Mushi at 240p with vertical scanlines is just gorgeous though, and I’m sure it looks even better on a CRT. As long as the sprites are optimized for HDTVs then I can’t complain.
Yeah, I’m gutted the filters from Futari didn’t make it over, that would have been amazing having them in the other games.
While the new sprites look incredible on the Switch’s handheld display, the backgrounds are now pixel doubled and just don’t look like they would have on CRT, so scanlines filters would have gone a long way as they did in M2’s Futari conversion
So, I regularly watch Shmup Junkie on youtube, and his latest video was about new shmups.
One of the games he mentioned is Operation S.T.E.E.L., and he’s holding a competition on the time attack mode in the demo version on steam.
I didn’t expect much from it, but damn… The time attack mode is awesome. It’s only 3 minutes long, hectic, and super fun. There’s lots of opportunity for little bonuses on scoring, and it’s deeper than it initially seems.
@Peltz are we allowed to link to competing discord servers here? I’d like to provide the link to the discord where the caravan competition is taking place, for anyone interested.
The game can be found here:
I don’t see why not. Go for it.
Alright, the link to the discord if anyone wants to try it out is https://discord.com/invite/KXwzNPQFge
Played some Batsugun normal version on Saturn tonight, actually been playing it for the past couple of weeks. I hope I can clear this version, I’m up to loop 3 in Special so far.
Nice! Batsugun on Saturn was my first ever 1cc!
Normal Batsugun manages to be challenging without feeling braindead easy. First loop of Special though, I cleared that on my second try at HEY. Subsequent loops get tough though.
Tonight we’re going in fast for a real bug hunt…
…because our Sunday Night Shmup for the evening of June 20th is Mushihimesama, one of my all time favorite shooters and I’m so glad The Company has finally brought it to Switch.
Current goal is trying to get to stage 4 on one credit.
Cave didn’t port it, they just llicense their stuff out to other companies: M2, EXA, City Connection, G-Mode and now Live Wire for these 360 to Switch ports.
Right, I edited that part a bit.
