The Sunday Night Shmup thread

I don’t think the PS1 port is based on v2, that version is brutally difficult (v1 was already hard enough!) and only created to get people off the machine quicker. I have never heard anyone talk of the PS1 version having the changes v2 introduced.

It being worth buying over the PS1 version depends on how much the improved timing accuracy matters to you, this exchausive comparison by IcarusFW is super useful to see the difference.

thanks! I’ll check that out

re: arcade v2, it’s something I saw on Wiki, so the jury’s out on that one. looking at it now it references an Electronic Gaming Monthly article from 1998. hard to see, but it does seem to claim that

sounds like the port is the way to go. Switch port seems excellent. never knew the PS1 port was so slow, and now I know why the Taito legends version is so hard lol

Played Tatsujin Oh on and off a lot this weekend on the Astro City Mini V, that game is brutal, I still can’t get past the first stage on a single credit. If M2 ever finally releases a ShotTriggers port I really hope they include a more balanced version or an easy/training mode. Beautiful Toaplan title with a great soundtrack but talk about Gradius III arcade levels of insane. Here is a video of someone doing a 1cc on it which I’ve been watching to see if I can improve at all:

lol Was just about to post this.

Mixed feelings oh this. On the one hand it’s one of my favorite STG games and could use a more current port, OTOH there are still so many other Cave titles like DDP Saidaiojou, Futurari, Mushi Mushi Pork, ect that are still stuck on 360 + M2’s excruciatingly slow release schedule. M2 does not excellent work but in the three years since they acquired the Toaplan IP rights they’ve only been able to manage two Toaplan releases (in rather bloated overpriced packages) and the Raizing library also needs more representation. Plus who knows when in 2023 this will be, could be next winter for all we know. But hey, at least I get to finally retire my PS2 copy.

my PS2 copy is about to make way for the Mister core (I believe there is one), but M2 releases always become the definitive versions so I can’t wait for this

I agree though, I wanted to see a Futari or other Cave games I’ve never played. still holding out hope that Livewire will handle that

I expect all the 360 ports to be re-ported by either LiveWire or City Connection in time. I think no matter what M2 release someone will want something else instead.

Jotego has the IGS hardware but hasn’t started work on the core yet, I wouldn’t expect that for quite a while.

Played some Arcade Archives titles today: Namco’s Assault and Metal Hawk. Really cool games! I just love the sprite scaling and rotation effects.

It’s more run and gun than shooter, but I picked up Shock Troopers 2nd Squad on Switch Arcade Archives because it’s on sale right now for $3.99. Managed to stick a score in the top 100. I just love score chasing in the AA releases.

Glad to have Salamander 2 up and running again.

Today I made it to Stage 5 boss, found it a bit troublesome. Rank gets crazy by then if fully powered. Want to clear a loop at least.

I’ve been reading up on scoring in Mushihimesama in the hopes of increasing my score chains in Maniac mode (the highest I think I am able to get so far is about 25K per hit during the latter part of the desert stage right after I’ve buiit a solid chain off the scorpion mid-boss, also some nice chains in stage 3, farthest I can make it on a single credit currently is stage 4 mid boss, hoping to 1cc the game someday).

According to some sources I’ve been reading, it sounds like to increase your chains, once the main “parent” chain counter hits at least 500 or more (or say when I’m fighting the aforementioned scorpion mid boss and I can sometimes get him to a nice chain of about 17K before he blows up) you should stop hitting the regular fire button and hold down the auto fire button which will somehow increase the “child” counter chains from your options even more? Of course that’s a somewhat basic understanding of what I’m reading and if anyone can clarify or give me some advice and correction on what I’m getting wrong or could be misinterpreting I’d greatly appreciate it. I’ve read on some stages you can get chains as high as 600K, not sure I’d be able to do that, just getting a nice series of 10K + chains and surviving a stage feels like an accomplishment for me, ha.

For some reason, I can’t seem to understand scoring in any of the modes of Mushihimesama, as compared to Futari 1.5 and BL. Still love the game, shame my plans of getting my hands on the PCB got delayed a bit.

That’s me and most shmups. Just trying to 1cc clear is enough excitement for me in most games.

I really think the scoring in some of these games is too complicated at times. I don’t mind some light combo stuff, but I’m not trying to do advanced calculus while blasting some bad guys.

I’m sure they’re fun for those that dig deep into them though. I imagine they get more fun for those that continue to play games after they 1cc them to max out score. I actually think the scoring systems have become more relevant in the streaming age where you could watch experts do them justice.

In that sense, they were forward thinking in the mid-2000s even when arcades starting dropping like flies.

It’s probably the article you’ve read already but in case not, I’ve found this site is pretty good with scoring descriptions: THE CAVE OF SHOOTING - 2004 - Mushihimesama

I havent played the game though! It does sound rather involved but the few Cave games I have played, they aren’t as complex as they sound on paper.

Having said that, i often find playing for score can really raise the difficulty, not just in terms of rank, but having to do things like kill in close proximity etc. It can also help you learn how to play well though, making you think about positioning more.

Thanks, yes that was one of the pages I read. :slightly_smiling_face: I’m still gonna try to up my score chains as high as I can but otherwise will probably just focus more on trying to 1cc it as I would have to agree that is more fun. @Peltz

excited to play Akai Katana this weekend. been meaning to play it forever and and glad it finally got ported to modern consoles

tried to take a break from grinding for 1cc’s in other games and play Espgaluda 2, but it turns out it’s even harder than any of the other games. I get wrecked by stage 2

Been playing both Detana TwinBee and TwinBee Yahhoo on and off for a couple weeks. Tonight I played Yahhoo and made progress towards a clear. Boss is giving me a bit of trouble though.
