The Sunday Night Shmup thread

Mad Shark is tomorrow’s Arcade Archives title, this is the first time it’s gotten a home release:

Purchased a digital copy of Ray’Z Arcade Chronology on PS4, this is a fantastic collection thanks to the usual high level polish from M2 and I’m having a blast rediscovering these games, especially Raystorm and Raycrisis both of which I hadn’t played in a really long time as my PS1 is in storage:

Is boss health lowered in Rayforce compared to the Saturn version? I’m killing bosses in the Ray’z release, even on the highest difficulty, much faster than I am in the Saturn version which feels more satisfying since you get to see more boss patterns before they die.

I feel like the Saturn release is more definitive than this one even if it took some liberties to balance itself differently than the arcade version.

I’ve always wanted to check out the arcade release since I love the game on Saturn, but I think I’ll stick with the Saturn version (specifically the Layer Section release in Japan).

So far I’ve played Raystorm and Crisis on the collection way more but yes, I definitely noticed this with the first boss on RayForce, it went down quite a bit easier than it did on the Saturn version.

The Saturn has better music too although I do beleive they did use the Saturn soundtrack on the Rayz collection.

Yeah, the default soundtrack is pretty bland, fortunately you can switch to the Saturn soundtrack.

I’m digging Mad Shark quite a bit.
It’s basically Raiden, maybe a little more forgiving and faster paced. Very solid, in my opinion!

I still haven’t downloaded it yet but definitely plan to soon. Raiden is one of my all time favorite shmups and since people from the same team worked on this it’s pretty much a guaranteed purchase. :sunglasses:

I remember playing it in arcades and thinking it was a total ripoff of Raiden but also that it was a lot of fun.

Finally got around to downloading this last night and as expected it’s a fun “clone” of Raiden, it’s also quite a bit more forgiving difficulty wise as you said.

Many (more or less) recent entries in the shmup category have been quite surprising and enjoyable, to me personally. This one here, Mazinger Z, Metal Black… I really hope Arcade Archives will keep on delivering!

Mad Shark is great. Simpler than Raiden in some ways but more complex in others. I’m having fun with it. Look for DaveLong on the leaderboard.

I also got Andro Dunos 2 and am really digging it. Such a crazy Neo game to get a sequel to years later. It has some rough edges but it’s a really good time.

Played some Darius Gaiden this afternoon. Finally installed an autofire circuit in this cab, so naturally I’d play this first.

Using autofire in this game kind of trivializes the difficulty so for some purists it’s akin to cheating, but since rank is tied to fire rate and it goes up quickly using it, it makes it a different experience. It is a must when striving for high scores, and it’s the way play at Taito HEY and Japanese arcades, so I’m cool with it.

Plus the Extra version of the game, while perhaps not official nor Taito sanctioned, also includes autofire built into the software and its balanced for it. Really haven’t played that version at all but it sounds intriguing.

Tatsujin Extreme has been announced for PS5, coming in 2024 and will also feature some kind of manga related promotion with famed “Joker Jun” Junya Inoue. The game will be shown at Tokyo Game Show next week, here’s the trailer, looks good so far:

Tomorrow’s ACA release is Darius II. The rare three screen version wasn’t included in the Cozmic Collection so I’ll be getting this:

Yesterday was Espgaluda’s 20th anniversary, so I and some friends honored playing it live-streamed on Artemio’s (of 240p Test Suite fame) YouTube channel, and I managed to perform a 1CC. Not my best performance, but it’s hard to play and chat at the same time lol.
