The Super Nintendo |OT| Thread - SNES is what SEGAIN'T

I remember creating scenes on my Atari ST and leaving it overnight to raytrace! And this does the same tens of times per second!

Are those new inserts?

Yes, they are third party though.

What’s your impression? My problem with brand-new retro controllers is the buttons feel a little too click-y. Too much resistance. I don’t think it’s strictly an age thing with the OEM controllers, either. They mostly seemed to have rubber that had more “give” in my estimation.

They are more clicky than the OEM ones like you described. There wasn’t anything particularly wrong with my OEM ones, but I wanted to swap them out to see if new ones felt better. I did this on a couple NES controllers as well.

I like them. I kept the old ones in case I wanted to go back to them in the future but I haven’t felt the need to so I’ve stuck with these.

Yeah I get that too… I have two NES controllers and two TG16 controllers. For both, on controller is stock and one is new aftermarket.

In both cases, I much prefer the stock ones. They feel better and have a nice solid feel without that extra harsh click that fresh aftermarket ones give.

People say this, but I’ve had two NOS old SNES controllers a few years ago, the second being a NOS Super Fami Mini pad, and they were definitely more clicky. Not quite as much as some newer ones (maybe the rubber still softens a bit just sitting in the box too?) , but we definitely break these things in from more to less clicky over time.

I remember comparing a SNES classic one with my still basically NOS one, and they were almost identical.

So after finally getting the FXPak I’m finally getting into these MSU-1 patches.

The Donkey Kong Country ones are great, being perfect reproductions of the original soundtrack synths just clearer.

I thought I wouldn’t like any changes to Super Metroid, but the one I got for it in quite amazing. Quite incredible having an actual orchestra playing. Won’t be my ‘main’ Super Metroid soundtrack but great for a run through.

Haven’t liked the Link to the Past one that much so far, and the FMV they added is :cheese:. But will try a bit more.

Any other recommendations?

Super Mario World is a really nice one.

Now I’m going nuts with these things.

Earthworm Jim 2 with the Saturn OST.
Earthworm Jim 1 with the Mega CD OST.

Zelda 3 FM
Zelda 3 25th Anniversary symphony

I feel like I’m the only one who prefers the originals. I’ll listen to better quality separately, but not in game. Isn’t chucking a much higher quality soundtrack on these games akin to HD’ing them with a filter? It’s just not right!

It’s just a fun gimmick in some cases. Zelda with FM music really, really feels like a X68000 port.

Will the Super Metroid one be my primary soundtrack for that game? No, but I’ve played that game through 50 times, so one time with a fresh OST is a nice change.

And the thing with say Earthworm Jim is these are officially released soundtracks for the same game, just swapped platform. It’s essentially exactly what a SNES CD release would have been. Same with using the Secret of Mana remake soundtrack on the SNES original, basically making it the SNES CD release it was originally supposed to be.

I love the SNES EWJ2 soundtrack but also love the Saturn one, now could have either with no load times on SNES!

There’s also some things that can enhance bugs. One guy has created a MSU1 soundtrack of the original Secret of Mana SNES songs… but now they can be played without instrument drop outs for sound effects, just a straight up upgrade with no asset changes.

Fair reasoning. I will allow it!

Just in case anyone hasn’t heard there are preorders up for clear SNES shells.

I saw that, it looks really cool! The price is a little high for me. I’m not complaining about the price; just more than I would pay for it. I do have a bare SNES mobo though so maybe one day.

Yeah, I’m kind of in the same boat. It’s too bad because from what I gather the injection molded projects are really expensive to produce. And I’d like to see more of these. Especially for the NES since so many of those shells are absolutely wrecked. But $127 shipped is a big ask.

All that effort for… The uggo US shell?

My opinion, right or wrong, is most SFC owners would prefer to stay OG whereas there are more SNES that are yellowed, mismatched top/bottom, or otherwise well worn so a larger market for aftermarket shells. Pure speculation on my part.

I haven’t looked into it, but I suspect the mobo size/config for an SFC is also different than a SNES? Maybe not, I’ve never seen an SFC in person.

Maybe a SNES fish tank would be better?
