Heck yeah!! I picked up a Nakamichi MR-1 at a local spot a few months ago. A lot of cassettes sound great!! I buy a bunch of all the formats - CDs, records, tapes. I bought 3 cassettes today (AC/DC - High Voltage, the Beatles - Live at the BBC, and Meat Puppets - Too High To Die)!
Nothing special for me just the Logitech z623 2.1 system for my PVM.
I chose it because I got a good price on them and they were shielded so they can sit nice and cozy with my 20L2 without causing any problems.
I just recently upgraded to a Denon AVR-X3500H. I needed a receiver with newer HDMI input ports and multiple HDMI out. This one has 3, a monitor 1 and 2 and a Zone 2. So I use Zone 2 for when I’m streaming or capturing to send audio and video to the capture card. I then use Monitor 1 on 1 input of my TV for anything that uses HDR, since that’s the input I turn HDR on and have it calibrated for that. Then I will turn off Monitor 1 and turn on Monitor 2 and use that for my non-HDR sources (which is mostly for gaming) so that has game mode on and color and stuff is calibrated for gaming. This all feeds my same 5.1 sound set up. Which consists of an old Yamaha 10 in subwoofer, 4 Athena Point 5 MKII bookshelf speakers, and an Athena Point 5 MKII center channel speaker. Which are also old at this point, I think I’ve had them since like 2005/6 but they still sound great, so haven’t felt the need to replace them or anything. I would like to upgrade to a better sub, but it just keeps getting pushed off.
I’m looking at buying some new headphones to replace my well used/worn out sennheiser HD201’s. I wouldn’t mind spending a bit more, does anyone have any suggestions ? It’s just for playing games, (mainly racing games), budget wise upto £150.
I have my eye on a pair of Grado SR80e’s at £83, does anyone have any experience of these ? One other thing to mention is that I don’t want a mic, I don’t play online or if I do, I don’t want to speak to people !
Any suggestions would be welcome !
My hearing is going so I’m looking at a pair of Nuraphones. Otherwise I use a pair of Superlux HD665 which were recommended by a sound engineer friend.
The Grado I didn’t find comfortable as I wear glasses.
Thanks for your suggestion. I wear glasses too. How comfortable are the Superlux ? I’ve read that they are intended for drummers !? If it helps I would be plugging these into a Denon AVRX550 receiver.
I have tinnitus and hearing loss that is probably age and lifestyle related. So I use wireless (bluetooth) earphones that offset the hearing loss with “personalisation”: a hearing test and subsequent equalisation of the audio. Technology is amazing.
My earphones are by beyerdynamic and support AAC,aptX,aptX-LL very well.
There are other manufacturers offering the same/similar thing: Audeara, Even, Nura, Skullcandy, etc.
So I recently bought a bluetooth transmitter that supports aptX-LL (low latency, 40ms) which my earphones also support (both need to support it). Now I route the audio that was going to my display to the transmitter to get great personalised audio direct to my failing ears.
Games haven’t sounded this great in years!
It’s great to see your audio set ups, I am a big fan of the old receivers, decks and modular audio components specially from the 90’s.
I have two game rooms let’s say, one for HDMI stuff and another for CRT gaming, here is the breakdown of my stuff:
this is the CRT area, here I have a Kenwood receiver KA-893, Aiwa CD player and two Akawa speakers.
In the HDMI game room I have a Denon receiver, MD deck, CD Player, LD player and a very cool japanese Technics Cassette deck
I am a fan of both rooms. The CRT room especially looks like a really fun place to play.
I’m digging that CD rack. It is giving me some serious nostalgia.
thanks! yeah the CRT room is my favorite, those old big speakers are super fun to listen when playing PC engine and Sega Genesis.
those minidisc look so good! it has been a couple of years now that the MD Decks are getting more and more expensive
That EBTG album is brilliant.
I worked at the design studio that did the album artwork. Takes me back!
I’m really digging your two rooms & av equipment.
I wouldn’t mind a cassette player but I’d be worried now that whatever Id buy would be worn out, the heads etc.
Without checking does anyone know if any one still manufactures dedicated cassette players anymore ?
Marantz still did last I checked. I’m sure there are others too.
wow! really?! man that’s so cool, EBTG is a legendary band I really love Tracy’s voice.
Yeah they are still being manufactured by Tascam, Pyle, Marantz a few others. Now that cassettes is making a come back maybe a good idea to get one
The headphone jack on my receiver just broke
Is there a decent headphone amp someone could recommend that will do the job for my older stereo systems? I have plenty of outputs on my BNC matrix switch so I figure I could route the sound to a separate output dedicated to headphones if I need to. That would work right? Do headphone amps take red and white RCA cables? Or do I need to convert to 3.5” jack first?
Also what would pair well with senheiser HD1’s?
Any tips on the transmitter? Model name would be cool if you’ve been happy with it!!
Very interesting post, thanks for sharing. I’ve been to 1000+ concerts and have probably donked up my hearing… and live in an apartment… my headphones are my best friends. Although interestingly I’m a glasses wearer AND a huge Grado fan!
Sure thing! All the recent ones seem much the same. Probably the same chipset if it talks about transmitting to to two headphones at once. Mine is model number SK-BTI-020V sold as many brand names, mine was
ACEKOOL Bluetooth 4.1 Transmitter Receiver, Wireless Audio Music Adapter 3.5mm Low Latency, 2 Devices Simultaneously For TV/Home Sound System/Car/Nintendo Switch
Basically I just picked a mid-price one that mentioned aptX-LL that was available for Prime delivery.
You can pay more to get S/PDIF input (if you use that for output), or aptX-HD (if your headphones support it) etc.
@Peltz I have a portable headphone amp - a FiiO A3 - that I used for my old wired headphones that has 3.5mm sockets. But there are some more heavy-duty amps that are made for the desk that would be suitable for your needs and larger headphone plug.
But… is your headphone socket likely to “just” need resoldering?
