Playdate - new handheld gaming system, with a crank

Yes! A buddy of mine Nic is working on that. He ported one version quite quickly, and has restarted to port a more versatile version.

I didn’t know there were so many different versions of doom source code!

Exclusive look at a new car!

Possibly the game mascot car.

It’s kind of like a VW bug that hasn’t fully accepted its future as a dune buggy. I like it!

A really good response to my game announce, including several people who said they would buy a device just to play it. Dream scenario!

I’m running a Patreon for my game, rewards are behind the scenes “making of” posts for those that might be interested in the game or Playdate or game development.

With regards to release, season one is full (and apparently has been for some time!?! bit of a shock to the developer preview crowd) so things are up in the air right now.

I’d rather have it released as part of a season so people are surprised to discover and play it, rather having to try to convince people to buy and play it.

Any thoughts?

Definitely try to get it in a season if you can. Either way, if I could get my hands on the hardware, I’m down to play it.

My thoughts exactly. Let’s see what the next couple of months bring.

Not surprised. Clones always seem to happen for every handheld.

Work on my game continues. I’ve also just set all the Patreon posts to readable, so nothing is locked away.

Release date still unknown. The only certainty is that we can only be getting closer to release.

The SDK continues to evolve. I recently benchmarked the last 4 versions and reported some performance regressions. I’ve been told that they liked my benchmarks so much they’ll be doing this internally going forward. So performance should improve and then at least not get any worse, but hopefully it improves over time. This is pretty huge as going forward it will benefit the platform itself as well as every game - not just the high performance “crazy” 60fps-targeting games like mine!

…onwards!

News!

Delayed until early 2021, will never be “sold out”, more games in Season 1 (but not mine).

Well, at least we can buy the knock off right now.

I’m now considering porting my almost finished game to other devices. I’ll be pitching to publishers soon. Not really what I expected to be doing.

Has something changed? Or is it a result of not being included in the first Season of games?

Nothing has really changed, things actually have to happen to cause change and nothing is happening from a Playdate Developer Preview perspective at least!

After the delay, and Season 1 being full (if you ignore the game by Chuhai Labs - developed since June this year - that was announced as a Playdate launch title just last week)…I just did some simple timelines.

  • Launch, maybe Easter
  • Season 1, maybe 4 months long
  • Earliest Season 2, maybe Aug 2021 or even 2022
  • Fuck

I’m not going to park this for a year on a wish and a hope. I need to be proactive.

Plus, I think my game would work well on Mobile and, say, Switch.

I’d pick it up on Switch for sure.
