Congrats! Beautiful setup you’ve got.
Yessir. I was going through a bit of a quarter life crisis at the time and decided to treat myself to something nice and irresponsible lol.
I’ve had it for a few years now.
And disc brakes are nice. All of the high end bikes have them now. It’s amazing how bike tech - even parts that are purely mechanical in nature - still continues to improve.
Cables, cables, cables! Again!
Looks great. Very clean, and not too squishy for the consoles.
And congrats on tying the knot too.
I reckon of your relationship can survive moving house in 2020, it’s in pretty good shape for the future.
Really awesome set up. Congrats!
That’s such a lovely room.
This is unbelievably good, it makes me so happy.
Also CONGRATULATIONS!!
Congrats, @Peltz
Beautiful setup, that room seems so cozy and warm.
Congrats on getting married, all the best to both of you!
Congratulations to Peltz !
Here, just an update :
Why the cristal ball ? For clairvoyance of course, I can’t be lost anymore :
Really love your setup as well!
That shelving solution seems rather impressive. Does it have to be attached to the wall as well?
Doubt I could get my landlord to agree to let me do anything like that… which is quite limiting sadly.
Yea, it’s all drilled into the wall.
@Tchiko is this you?
SHITTY FUTON ACQUIRED // IT’S TERRIBLE !
Where’s the futon? All I can see is some couch. Is it over the couch.
Doesn’t look shitty to me. Nice pillow too
It’s been a while since I’ve given an update on my setup. The last time I did a full set of photos was unfortunately with a terrible phone camera and poor lighting. Things evolved there, a bigger desk, more games, more crts, etc the usual. I mentioned a few months ago I have switched things over to a much tighter space – I moved things up from a large open basement to a small extra bedroom that I’m now using as a home office. Reason being I have small children and I need to keep a close eye on them in the evening while they are sleeping and being in the next room makes it 1000x easier.
I realized I never gave a proper update after that project was done. So… here it is!
Due to space constraints I have committed to a desk-focused setup. This means I am playing modern / widescreen / HDMI game systems on a 1440p 27 inch monitor, Xbox/Dreamcast and vintage PCs on a 17 inch VGA CRT monitor, and all other console systems on a 13 inch 15khz video monitor.
This is working out better than I had expected. I find myself playing more games and I feel like it’s a lot easier to get going into a game than my previous large screen + couch setup.
I wanted to go over some of the little touches and what I did to make everything fit.
The core of this setup really is the security monitor on the right.
Because it is squared off on all sides it’s very easy to fit things around and on top of it. As you can see on top I have an Onkyo minidisc/amplifier combo unit that serves for sound for everything on this side of the desk, minidiscs to go with it, as well as room for sticking little odds and ends like the GBA and my glasses. This squared off verticality really helps to add space – in effect the square stuff adds space rather than takes it away.
I continued this theme with the Roland sound modules, stacking them + a GameCube and squeezing a PS2 in next to it. Again, lots of spare space to fit the little extra stuff. I’m playing a GameCube game so I stuck the case there and have space to stick a controller. And despite things being so tight it doesn’t feel too crammed in – I think having the extra little bits of space really helps.
The squareness of the monitor helps again on the other side where I have a Wii, two s-video switches, and one of the bookshelf speakers, using every last mm of horizontal space available.
Another aspect that really helps here is the monitor risers. These again help to just add space, I’m able to fit a keyboard, mouse, an MSX, extensions for AV, a power strip, and some space to hide a wires + an RGB to s-video encoder in the back. I’m playing a DS game so I’m using the power strip for the charger for that; once the game is done that’ll be put away (more on that later).
On the left I have a VGA CRT that is mainly used for vintage computers. I was pretty keen on having 480p game consoles on it, but I’m starting to think 480i is more appropriate for those, so the OSSC attached is currently only connected to the Xbox with an easy to access scart port for Dreamcast. And hey why not squeeze in the 2nd speaker with a cute little PSPgo on top.
Over in the corner I have all the HDMI consoles in vertical orientation (I need to rework how they’re arranged in here), a modern PC, and controllers out only for systems I’m actively playing. This monitor doubles as a work monitor so this side gets a lot of use.
I’ve also got a stack of Xbox, Roland MU-90, and a MicroATX Windows 98 PC (an Athlon XP system with a higher end Geforce FX series card). As much as I like how small this 4th computer is, and my slick idea to mounting-tape the external DVD drive to it, I really prefer large towers for vintage PCs – just feels right and it makes working in them easier. But if I had to I could shrink down to just this PC and a G4 Mac Mini and do OK.
Looking below I have two Windows 98 PCs (a K-6 III+ based one mainly used for DOS and a 1GHz Pentium 3 with a Voodoo 3) as well as a Power Mac G3 for Mac OS 9.
I tried my best to wrangle cables. I made a custom shelf for them using an old wire rack and some extra IKEA curtain hangers I had. In there are as many AC bricks as I could fit, as well as a 4 port KVM + audio switch for the PCs. Just out of sight is uh… another KVM (a 2 port one) so that I can hook the OSSC up as well. It also makes it easier to slot in another vintage PC to mess around with.
I also have some stuff stored under the desk in the corner, mostly smaller old PCs and larger controller accessories.
I cleared out part of my desk drawers to put cartridge games – at first I did this for space reasons but I like it way more than them being on a shelf, makes it much easier to thumb through them, so this will likely be permanent.
Next to my desk is a small side table where I like to keep this cute box intended for tea storage to hold memory cards and other small accessories:
And hey why not cram a Genesis + Sega CD combo that I couldn’t figure out where else to put in some extra space on the bottom of the side table:
What makes this all work is that I have a lot of stuff taking up not much space in a closet in the same room:
As many game consoles made sense are in these magazine files. In most are a console, an appropriate AV cable, and a power cord or AC adapter.
It’s very easy to just pull out a system and bring it to my desk and plug it in. I made sure to make this as frictionless as possible with an AC power strip on the desk top and easy to access extensions for svideo+rgb.
The handheld magazine files are much more filled:
And I got these over the door hangers, one intended for shoe storage for controllers and another intended to store baby essentials for other odds and ends:
There were some losses in moving things to a smaller space. I had to put away my iMac G4 and my recently acquired iMac G3
– there was just no way to fit them and not have everything look super crammed and uncomfortable.
For space reasons, I cut down to one Billy shelf for my game storage. This meant I needed to make some cuts so every Japanese language RPG I own is currently in a set of boxes in my storage room, and I have a bunch of games that are hidden behind games on this shelf as it’s stuffed full. I’m thinking about what to do here, probably going to get some wall shelves in above my desk, but I’ll have to share that another day.
All in, I have a modern PC, 3 vintage PCs, a Power Macintosh G3, an MSX, a Genesis/SegaCD, a PS2, a GameCube, an Xbox, a Wii, PS3, Wii U, PS4 Pro, Xbox One X, a Nintendo Switch, and a PSP Go left connected on a single desk.
Ready to grab and connect are 5 more vintage computers, an AV Famicom, PC Engine Duo R, Super Famicom, PSone, Saturn, N64, Dreamcast, and a bunch of Game Boys, DSes, 3DSes, PSPs, Vitas, and a SwanCrystal.
Really nice setup, looks like you put a lot of thought and care into it!
Looks excellent. I really wish I had space for a desk for a setup like this. I there are times where I actually like it more than a living room setup.
Excellent use of space, and I’m loving those Roland units!
Thanks for sharing @poptart.
