The draw of games brings back memories. That’s how I used to store my Mega Drive games.
I remember your post on ERA. Cheers.
Yeah, I’ve been looking for an active retro gaming forum ever since posting my story there. I was starting to think they’d all died off outside of reddit and facebook. I’m jazzed to be here.
Man, so many awesome posts since I last checked this thread. Haven’t done much retro gaming recently. I just moved recently and am still bringing over my gaming stuff slowly and still trying to get more furniture (which is hard now given the lockdown we have in Ontario)
Nice, welcome! I saw your pics on Era also.
As far as S-video on your TV, awesome! S-Video was great back in the day and still is…and on a 27" screen. I have a 20" PVM and I still find myself longing for a 27"+ CRT even if it maxes out at S-Video.
Today I saw a listing for a 36" JVC D-series local to me for sale for $15! I have nowhere to put it, my wife would kill me and I’d need ongoing back pain care to try to move it, but you gotta dream right? (I want it so bad lol)
Better to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission?
Do it! But bring a dolly and a friend for sure. After carrying that 27" Trinitron down a flight of stairs I keep thinking I should be doing like 100 squats a day just in preparation for the day I have to move the thing again lol. I can’t imagine tackling a 36". I’d have a better chance of deadlifting one of those ancient viking stones in Iceland.
Not in my house ![]()
Haha, I feel your pain.
Fortunately it’s a two way thing: we both get full veto rights on what we put in our apartment just because it’s such a small space. There’s just about nothing else we could add to it at this point anyway. We’re pretty much at max capacity of furniture and video games without it looking cluttered.
Truth is, the two biggest walls in the place are taken up mostly by my gaming hardware, and she knows I love it and hasn’t said one negative thing about it. I’m a lucky guy and definitely feel like she’s been more than fair in my favor.
Someday, however, I hope to get a house that can accommodate everything we really want to do: a gaming room, art/pottery studio, and a place to put a pinball machine or two.
ha, gotta pick your battles right? I think she’d be more like, “Really?” than upset knowing that I could get rid of it if needed to. The main issue is not being able to move it by myself. I moved my old 27" D-series several times so at least I know I can move that. 36" is way too big.
I made the mistake of looking at CRTs online yesterday. There was the 36", a 32" D-series ($20), 27" Trinitron ($25), 14" PVM for $30(!) S-Video only though, and a 27" Toshiba for free listed as not working - could be an interesting project as I’ve never really worked on CRTs before. I’ll likely get none of them though. In a month or so I’ll be home alone for a couple weeks, perhaps make some bad (read: good) decisions then lol. Wives biggest fear leaving their husbands home alone in 2021: They’ll spend tens of dollars on CRT TVs!
Lol. If you do make any bad decisions and get some CRTs remember to share pictures about them with us!
An actual retro corner. Now with the OSSC and my custom saturn arcade stick that I made during the first months of the pandemic.
Love seeing those Virtual Sticks in any form. I have an unhealthy obsession with arcade sticks despite the fact I can’t play half as well with them compared to a good controller.
@Bozo_Cyborg Thanks! I was pretty amazed by the results since I didn’t even knew how to solder or what I needed to make one work, but with a help from my friends @Suteneko, @Laevateinn and others and some free time made possible by the pandemic, I managed to make it happen. My dream is to have 2 arcade sticks for each console that I have for friends coming over like the old times. Right now only the Neo Geo is like that, but I have at least one, so I’m halfway there.
I also love arcade sticks, and I feel that the feedback it gives (clicky lever sound and crunchy buttons) gives me a edge in arcade games, and also the nostalgia of the fun time at the arcades.
Setup is now a work in progress with the addition of a Sega power station. I just needed to get it tested so I could send some feedback. Virtua Racing Deluxe on 32X is definitely still a fine port and the two extra circuits and two additional cars add nice variety.
Lookin good!
Man… I have the Model 1 Genny with a Model 2 Sega CD and it looks like crap compared to that. I really want to “upgrade” to a model 2 Genesis, but I’m worried that the sound or RGB won’t be as good as my Model 1.
But in the looks department, it just goes so much better with the Sega CD model 2 and the 32x. And it shaves some inches off the horizontal profile of the console which would be even more aesthetically pleasing in my setup.
@DaveLong Quick question if you happen to have a ruler handy: How many inches or centimeters tall is this setup with a 32x and with a game inserted?
For what it is worth @Peltz I have a non TMSS model 1 Genesis, and I have a bunch of Model 2s. When I’ve done the triple bypass to them they basically become indistinguishable from each other. Even the Non-TMSS Model 1 sounds only slightly different than say a VA 1.8 Model 2. In general I think the differences are kinda overblown. If you end up wanting a bypassed Model 2 holler at me. I have one sitting around ready to sell.
Yeah, the triple bypass is the way to even out all the genesis models so you can just use the one you want without worrying about the major mb revision differences.
