The Sonic robe is my favorite part. Amazing setup!

Posted this elsewhere already but ever since I moved into my current home I never really got around to properly setting back up my retro game setup again and getting obsessed with Cleopatra Fortune did not help the matter…

I was just using a temporary and rather cable messy setup in the livingroom that has now been dismantled to make a more relaxed space and so that not everyone that visits can see a mess of monitors and old consoles anymore.

I think it turned out okay, though thinking I need to build up a media PC to include in the setup.

Livingroom setup and utility cupboard “repair center” are not quite ready to show as well yet, but are getting there again.

The set up looks awesome! Just noticed that you have what looks like a Sony Pro-VCR. Been wanting to track down a working one for years.

I do indeed have one, however I do not rate it and would say the Panasonic DMR-EZ48V does a much better job of VHS video output over the Sony SVO-9500MDP which even only had 1 hour of usage on its video head when I obtained it…

Shame those Panasonic “Prosumer” models and especially the ones with built in VCR are now going for silly prices as they can upscale VHS to 1080p over HDMI and the 480i or 480p over component video output is really impressive especially when displayed on a CRT. Using the built in digital tuner you can even record modern TV channels to VHS if you wanted to!

Yeah it’s really fascinating. I’d love to get one of the handful of SVHS players with S-Video out too. I’m not aware of any VHS players that could output RGB but I’d love to have one that I could use for my pro monitors without having to swap them back over to another input type.

It is the only SVHS VCR I have ever come across, which is the main reason I have kept the Sony Pro-VCR around but really I have never seen any pre-recorded SVHS Tapes in the UK and think we only got blank SVHS for the purpose of better home recordings.

I also have a Time Lapse VCR stored away which I bought solely for the purpose of being able to view a couple of security tapes that had been obtained from some urbex.

Some PAL VCR can do this over SCART but they are few and far between. The Panasonic in question that I own can do it but so much easier for me to wire it through the setup over component instead of having to deal with SCART to BNC cabling.

When I’m more sorted out, I’ll probably do a much better setup walk through including the other rooms but feels like I am in a constant never finished phase.

Really organized and clean looking setup. Glad you squeezed in a PC CRT too. Feels like a must for Dreamcast. Hoping one day when I move somewhere bigger that I can add one to my setup as well.

I’d love to get a SVHS and player just to see what the format really looks like. Unfortunately Ebay listings are pretty steep ($100 and up for most models). I remain vigilant at thrift stores though!

I just recently got a Toshiba SVHS player at the thrift store!! Plugged it in svideo and popped in a normal tape - looked great!.. the next day I put in a tape and it ate it! And ate every tape after that :frowning: Broke my heart. Glad I didn’t order any SVHS tapes I guess.

Open it up. Probably a simple mechanic issue. Stuck gear, gummed up roller, something like that. Most of these need nothing more then a wipe and a bit of lubricant.

Why do I never learn?

Bought a new cabinet, thought it would be a quick rewire, didn’t take any photos or notes on the previous wiring and have a bunch of wires left over that I have no idea about. :man_facepalming:

Well, it’s that time I dread every time I move - time to disassemble my setup and move - this time across the country from one coast to another.

Every time I put it back together, it’s a little different and the cable management gets a bit better.

Here was the final configuration in this apartment with the latest consoles, books, cameras, and pieces of pottery I had placed on it along with the equipment itself.

I haven’t taken a dead-on photograph of it before, but this is sorta what it feels like to sit in front of it (although pictures don’t really do it justice - it always looks more imposing in photos than it does in person where it blends into the environment more).

I think it’s going to look slightly different in the new place. The cabling will be better hidden at the very bottom, and maybe place things a bit differently around it too. The new place has 25ft ceilings and much bigger walls so I’m curious to see how it will look there surrounded by more artwork.

Here’s a closer view showing the exposed cabling at the bottom I hope to hide better (pardon the dust).

I also meant to have more photos going down the left side to the floor where there is open space on the wall, but we neglected to mount them (shame on us lol).

I also plan to have a “top” to the top right corner of the unit in the next apartment to make the whole thing feel more like a perfect square rather than leaving the records “exposed” with no top as they are here. I think that could add some more symmetry to the design without making it too precisely symmetrical. It’s actually going to be an upside-down shelf which I think will look cool and give it a nice contrast to the other surfaces.

But overall, this configuration felt solidly put together and was a cool - if not a bit too commanding - statement piece in our living room over the last few years.

I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea to have something so big, but I really love coming home to this monster.

Down it goes. On to the next adventure.

We could have opted for more rooms with our budget, (we were originally planning on upgrading from a 1 bedroom to a 2 bedroom) but we decided against it when we saw this place due to the high ceilings and very wide open living area. It’s kind of loft-like which is cool (but it’s not quite a real loft). We’re also saving a few pennies since this place is less expensive than a 2 bedroom.

One thing I learned in apartment viewing this time around - opting for more vertical height on the ceilings is cheaper than increasing the square footage of the floors, but can still have the same impact on your perception of “size” of the room.

The place feels huge as a one bedroom even though it is technically smaller (and cheaper) than a lot of two, and even three, bedroom apartments I saw.

It’s always stressful, and a ton of work, to move, but a blank canvas can be fun too.

Yes I’m a big fan of tall ceilings. I have 13 ft ceilings in my 100+ year old house - tall ceilings are an absolute must for me.

25 feet must feel like you’re living in a mansion. Don’t let go of any balloons.

Congrats also

Thanks! It’s definitely not a mansion but much bigger than what we currently have so we’re excited.

It’s something like this:

On second thought, maybe it’s only 20 ft?
