Post your Retro Setup in Here

Update:

The clutter from taking this thing apart is giving me anxiety. Seeing photos of how zen it was before when it was all put together is my motivation to not burn all this stuff to the ground lol.

Having to move and knowing how intricate, space consuming, expensive, and time consuming all of this is can sometimes feel like a fool’s errand. This hobby requires a TON of devotion if you’re trying to go 100% with original hardware in the same space that you’re actually living in while trying to make it all look nice. Doing so is like threading a needle at times - it’s highly impractical and deep down you know it.

But man, once all of the substantial and painful legwork is done, it feels like I’ve converted a blank canvas into my home. Just gotta keep that in mind and stay motivated.

we’ve all been here
i swear ill label and coil cables right next time

I take my time and keep all the consoles and corresponding cables together along with photos of the last setup. Otherwise it’s too hard.

In that sense, disassembly is more time consuming than assembly.

This may not be helping :hear_no_evil:

Good luck @Peltz. I’m going to get an upscale eventually for my new family room/modern setup, which has been years and years in the planning. I’ll keep most in my basement with a CRT but don’t want all the stuff (and can’t) in my main setup.

Here’s a pic of how it’s shaping up. A 77” C1 awaits.

2 setups are better than 1 anyway.

Are you moving for a new job?

On the other hand, the downside of high ceilings is higher heating/cooling costs. Currently struggling to keep my place cool right now.

Sorta - my wife’s new job. I’m actually keeping my current job but will go from hybrid to full work-from-home.

I’m going to enjoy it though - we’ll be soaking in the nice weather in Los Angeles which has always been kind of a dream of mine that I never thought I’d ever actually live out.

That LA/NYC connection

We’ll see how it goes. Not sure how much I’ll fit in.

Feels like this is a real thing when I visited:

(I’m the guy on the right in both images lol)

This feels… weird. There’s an echo in here now that it’s so empty.

Kind of odd when you take all your stuff out of a place, it doesn’t resemble at all how you remember it when moving in.

Always feels odd, then when you arrive at your new place it takes at least 6 months to begin to feel like home.

My Pikmin 3 cockpit.
On a more serious level, I discovered than when playing with two screens, I prefer not to have the second screen on my field of vision, cause even if I focus on the first my brain is disturbed by the second image and it’s not very pleasant, like with a 3DS. Here I have to turn my head to see the map (then not seeing the TV anymore) and it’s a perfect feeling for me. With Star Fox Zero I put the little screen in my hands just under the TV screen but as close as my eyes can see, so with the focus difference my brain only analyse one screen at a time.

Finally got the shelves up in a new place. Man moving really sucks when you have this sort of collection.

Still need to mount the new OLED (got a C1!). Then hook it all up.

Our movers were NOT careful. So many shelves and pieces of nice furniture have scuffs, dents, and scrapes. Just goes to show that even when you take care to really respect your items and pack them nicely, it’s only as good as the least careful person who handles it. At least visually, the damage was minimal.

I just hope the CRTs still work.

Sorry to hear about the crappy movers… can’t wait to see your stuff all set up again!

Still waiting… :stuck_out_tongue:

I had some friends over yesterday. Set up a VIC-20, Atari 2600, Atari 800, Apple IIe, Amiga 2000, Commodore 128, and of course the main couch with the various consoles.

Was an awesome time, got some got high score competitions going!

This is exactly why I move everything myself every time I’ve had to move. Other people will not give the appropriate care for your precious items as they mean nothing to them. I really wouldn’t trust anyone to move my CRT’s or Arcade PCB.

Hopefully everything is fine with your CRT’s.
I’ve seen some that have taken a lot of serious abuse and survive so expect they are all good still.

@raskulous Loving that score blackboard!

Fortunately, the CRTs are perfectly good.
