I bought it specifically out of curiosity for how its temporal antialiasing works, which was implemented as flickering between two ‘spaces’ of the original image to make up for lost vertical resolution on the GBA’s 240 x 160 screen.
It’s neat how they used non-square 4:3 ratio pixels for the sprites in the fold-out manual:
Also received Deadly Premonition 2, which I might wait for more patches before playing. I’m not even sure if stable performance is salvageable considering the choice of Unity engine being CPU-bound on open world games of this ilk…
Well, on a hunch decided to pick up a “non working” 3ds local pickup for 10 euros. It’s the original model. absolutely no cosmetic damage except for a very small dent in one of bottom corners from some past fall. Owner showed it wasn’t turning on. Blue light came on for a sec and nothing else happend. Got home, grabbed an SD card, loaded up cfw recovery files, fired it up and…
It’s more that the third party solutions don’t have any benefits - they perform worse than the stock PSU. I’ve noticed some light noise on white screens with my DreamPSU but that could also be due to the wiring in my home (which is ancient).
Apparently the Modem/Broadband port also has a 12v feed going to it. Not sure on the knock on affect for that port and might only be used by the BBA/LAN adapters.
Really the 12V on the AV port is used for video switching and monitor detection and more an issue in PAL regions because our consumer grade TV’s could detect it as they weren’t limited to composite and maybe S-video if you was lucky like in the USA.
I don’t think modern televisions care about the 12v line but older sets likely might.
And lastly of course it is used for the GDROM which you won;t care about if using an ODE.
I haven’t noticed any issues, but I’ve only played it for about 30 minutes since I went back to stock. I have a laser thermometer. What part of the PSU should I check? Expected temperatures?
Found a new shop in Yokohama that had some games I’ve been looking for for a while and decided to bit the bullet on some of them. Also SOR4 physical copy rocked up in my letter box today.
I feel pretty happy with the prices I paid for these guys and am glad to have found at least 3 of them in the wild!
@Gravitone, I have an original 3ds that black screened while I was installing CFW was there anything special you did to get that one of yours working?
Not really. I was lucky enough that this unit was set up in the past to boot from virtualnand on the sd-card. The original card must have crapped out at some point giving the impression that the unit was dead. The bootloader on the onboard flash was still intact. You might be able to get yours working again, but it really depends on where in the process it stalled on you.
