I dropped Yu-no to complete later on, the (presumably very long) epilogue just wasn’t interesting. Really enjoyed everything up to that point though, the flowchart really was ahead of its time, and the original soundtrack is phenomenal. Since then I’ve been playing:
Ring Fit Adventure
I’ve been loving this! Been playing about half an hour a day - I play it until it asks me whether I want to quit for the day.
It’s classic Arcade Nintendo: it’s wholly built around a new method of control (you even control the menus with ring-con movements), the exercises are well integrated into the game world, and the minigames are just plain fun. My favourite is one where you have to squat and push in on the ring-con to sculpt a pot of clay and make it match an image on the left hand side.
I think it’s by the team behind Rusty’s Real Deal Baseball, Miitopia and Labo and maybe the StreetPass games (wish there were credits for the plaza itself).
Mary Skelter 2
I’m impressed with this game, it’s probably the most competently designed game I’ve played from Compile Heart. I think some of the production team behind Trillion: God of Destruction worked on this because it’s just so much better than their other games, and Trillion was directed by Disgaea 4’s director.
Anyway, it’s a pretty fun dungeon crawling RPG with great level design and an intricate battle system. I’m not particularly interested in most of the dialogue - there’s just too much exposition - but the overarching story seems to be interesting at least.
Each extra party member brings with them a skill that will help you traverse the dungeons. I just got a character who will spawn a warp point three squares away from me - useful for crossing any gaps. And the nightmares (think Etrian Odyssey’s FOEs but without any puzzle element) are relentless at hunting you down. If they see you the dungeon map disappears and you have to leg it away from their line of sight. Good stuff - even if it isn’t quite the thinkers’ game as Etrian Odyssey.
Monaco: What’s Yours is Mine
I missed this when it released six years ago but it’s a perfect fit for Switch. It’s a top-down co-op stealth game where you assume one of many classes/roles and raid different locations in each mission. The classes are good fun to assume - one lets you dig walls, another helps pick locks faster, and so on. Like the best multiplayer games this game really brings out the personalities of its players. Especially as the emphasis - but not enforced - on stealth means there’s always the temptation to liberate yourself from restraint and run through an area for its treasures…
This is probably the most convincing thing I’ve read to make me want to try Apex Legends.
