I’m also a jazz fan, having played sax in HS and college. Did you play at all?
Nah, I just listen a lot.
nice OP! i box and do stuff, lot of reading (philosophy/politics/tons of comics). as for hobbies of other stuff i collect, definitely books/comics (trades, too many omnibuses) and records too! i inherited a large collection from a DJ buddy years back and have been building on that, here i am on discogs
I thought I’d bump this thread, as I find it awesome to see all the great hobbies you guys have.
Similarly to others that posted here, I have young kids so most of my free time is spent hanging out with them, teaching them things, etc.
When I do have free time for myself (and some left over energy! ), I play music.
I’ve built myself a nice little setup with different instruments I like to mess around with. It’s fun to make some noise.
I really want to have a drum kit. Looks amazing.
Building bikes. Like road and track bicycles. Outside of my gaming collection I’d say my second most “treasured” item is my Cinelli I built to fit my short 5’6" ass lolol
Oh nice! I’m planning on moving to the suburbs in about a year and I want to grab a road bike when I do for climbing hills and exercising.
I’m still riding an entry level Trek FX1 with disc brakes. Any tips for making the transition from a hybrid bike to a road bike for a newbie? I imagine that the shoe/pedal setup takes a while to get used to. Anything else I should look out for?
I love this thread. It’s always fun getting to know RGBers better.
I have too many hobbies. Outside of Video games and electronics I also play music. I’ve been in bands on and off since the late 90s. I play a little bit of acoustic guitar but I’ve been playing drums for years. I’ve also fronted a handful of projects.
Here’s. Shot of the band room I built back in 2010/11
My most recent band is Crooked Hills. I joined up with them about a year and a half ago when their old drummer moved to Colorado. Here’s a video from the second set I played with them. This was right before lockdown.
I also used to do drums and vocals for an extreme metal band called Dweller in the Valley. That project has been on hiatus for a few years but I spoke with the guitar player recently about doing some more music. We put out a demo and an EP on a couple small labels before going on hiatus.
Other than that I enjoy hiking, hunting and shooting. I don’t really consider art a hobby anymore since I made a career of it but it was my first passion. I also enjoy gardening when I can get to it. My wife tends to hold down that fort but I still count it as a hobby. I put in my first garden in-ground in 2011. It was 1600 square feet and I had no Idea what I was getting in to.
Last year I regraded the yard, took out the old patch and put in raised beds. Much more manageable these days. Berries in the front and side yard. Veggies in the back.
So yeah, I keep busy!
That garden looks great! One day, I hope to move into the burbs and have a great garden like that!
Burbs are my native habitat! Gardening is very satisfying. The food also just straight up tastes better than anything you can get at the store. When I lived in a city I did some container gardening on my back porch. Nothing major but I got some tomatoes and herbs going.
I very recently tried my hand at pottery. I made these during my first lesson:
I didn’t get to fire or glaze them myself - the instructor did that. But I did enjoy throwing the clay on the wheel. I signed up for classes and I’m hoping to make a tea set for my wife who’s an avid tea drinker by the end of the lessons.
My long term super-ultimate goal is to one day get good enough make a lamp out of porcelain (it will be a while ).
It’s a very calming art form. It’s hard to describe just how relaxing being at the wheel and manipulating the clay feels as it spins.
By friend does that. His balcony is overtaken by veggies. They’re incredibly good and we use them to cook when we visit.
LOL
I spend a lot of my time Thai Boxing, but that’s been kind of curtailed by the pandemic. Hiking has been my go to physical activity lately!
I love hiking. Went hiking for a week in Banf a few years back and it was one of the best trips of my life.
Banff and Jasper are both amazing places. I feel pretty fortunate at times to live in the same province as both.
We just moved to Colorado from Pennsylvania. Primarily did it for the hiking! We’re aiming to hit as many 14ers as we can this summer.
I may do a similar move someday. Colorado seems like a great place.
