I’ve been talking about it in the Genesis/Mega Drive thread. This controller kicks major ass. I’m probably going to order another one.
I received mine yesterday, the Bluetooth one to use on pc. While I love the controller itself, the shape, feel, etc. I don’t like how games are just not made for it. Everything is designed around the ABXY scheme, and with the B/Y jump/shoot popularized by the SNES. Except it doesn’t work at all on a six buttons controller, where C to jump and B to shoot is much more natural. But of course, most modern games simply don’t allow for remapping, or lose consistency with its prompts.
I know how you feel. I, and games in general, have gotten use to the 4 face buttons and 4 shoulder button layout.
My white one arrived today. It’s lovely. I now have one black and one white. I am so glad they have the six face buttons. I have always played Genesis games with my index, middle and ring fingers on the buttons. So much better for pretty much any kind of game IMO.
Worth linking this here:
Not tested out the M30 with a game yet but the ergonomics and price are amazing. I think I’ll be picking up a white version.
Only time will tell but 8bitdo’s offering has made Krikkz redundant IMO. It performs on par, is half the price and can be used as a USB controller.
I bought (2) 2.4ghz ones and (1) BT one. No regrets!
I did the same. Well, my black ones are bad so I had to rebuy them. The M30 BT was mainly for Switch, MiSTer and PC when I didn’t want to bust out an arcade stick. I could see it for emulation if I ever wanted to do that on my phone.
Can I see a photo of this grip?
I really like my 2.4ghz one, I really wish they made a 2.4ghz one for the SNES. I now have a working retro receiver with it, but I can definitely notice the little bit of lag.
They mentioned in a tweet they were doing a snes version!
Are you a communist plant or a body snatcher?
Nice!
Both?
I always thought it was more responsive to hold a controller that way and when fighting games became a thing it was even more useful as a grip because Street Fighter and others evolved those three button Super attacks, etc. You couldn’t hit all three buttons with your thumb!
I’ve been holding the Sega controllers that way since like 1991.
I tried it last night and it hurt beyond belief. Maybe if I was evil since 1991 I could have gotten used to it.
In all seriousness, I have no pain with arcade sticks, it’s just the thumb part holding makes for painful stretching or something.
I have a fairly loose grip with that hand. I’m basically holding the controller with the left hand and button pushing with the right.
It also makes it easier in games that required you to hold one button to run and another to jump. Now that I think about it, I’ve been holding a controller like that since the NES. I would play Super Mario Bros. that way. I forgot about that! It’s a longtime thing for me.
My thumb goes across the ABC buttons and I use my lower part of my thumb to hit C whole A&B gets pressed with the tip of my thumb. My grip was formed on the SNES so my fingers naturally go to the shoulder buttons.
The Saturn might be the best digital pad ever made.
Those face buttons using your thumbs are ill suited to hitting two buttons at once. Annoyed me in Zero 2 needing to hit three at once to do L3 supers.
In case anyone missed this article:
Thanks for posting that. It’s a nice writeup.
Kind of crazy that they didn’t expose that port and require you to open the receivers. I guess that probably cost more for that type of mold?
