Quick question about the M30 BT before I buy. Would the M30 BT would have any increased lag over the 2.4GHz while plugged in via USB?
I ordered a used 2.4GHz model but unfortunately it arrived without the receiver despite being listed as Like New. I contacted 8BitDo but they refused to send or even sell me a 2.4GHz receiver (their rexsponse was “we are manufacturers far away in China, it would take too long to send one to you. Please contact your retailer”, and Amazon agreed to send me out a receiver but it was the BT one (of course). Since I already have the Retro-Bit Saturn pad for Emulation and lagless play, I have decided to return the 2.4GHz for a BT model. I just want to be sure I’m not going to see any more lag over USB with this model.
Haven’t come across any tests for wired USB myself. Not much help but I did see a few anecdotal “it feels fine” comments.
Do you plan to use the M30 BT wired on the Switch btw? I read it won’t work and it doesn’t seem to be mentioned in the manual but USB wired connections are listed for Win/MacOS/Android. (Wired connection for Switch is also mentioned in the 2.4ghz manual)
I had seen that in the manual for the 2.4GHz Switch is listed, but in reviews no one mentions it working. I could not get the Switch to recognize the controller at all, but I will try to update firmware before making the return.
For Switch, I wouldn’t care about lag so much and so I’d just be using BT. PC is where I’d be trying to eek out performance.
I don’t have a switch to test myself unfortunately otherwise I would have checked.
Found this reddit thread talking about the USB poll rates of 8bitdo controllers and whilst M30 isn’t specifically mentioned I think they found a version of the SFN30 has either 16ms or 32ms. Hopefully, they’ve improved USB polling for their new controllers.
It is hard for me to believe it is that low, but after my customer service responses I wouldn’t doubt if 8bitdo used the lowest they could manage.
That thread actually made me look for away to identify USB polling rate for a controller to test myself. I found some tools for mice and USBview from Microsoft, but I’m not sure I’m reading that right.
So I’ll test the M30 2.4GHz with Switch when I get home to do so, but in the meantime, does anyone know of a simple app that measures USB polling rate for game controllers?
Edit: No luck with the FW update. Switch still doesn’t recognize the controller when plugged in. I’ll be returning it tomorrow.
I did the firmware update on my M30 today. Notable that it took me about three different cables before I found one that allowed the PC to recognize the receiver. Luckily I had the right screwdriver for it too.
I was getting some interference so this was a massive upgrade for me. It worked like a charm now.
