Game Boy/Color/Advance OT + Collecting Thread - Get into it!

Very nice

Is that the Funnyplaying v2?

I’d love to get some other people’s opinions on some of the image retention in high contrast games. I see a lot of people saying it’s perfect and while it’s certainly the best IPS LCD for the GBA it does have some niggling issues.

SMB3 is a good test as if you run left to right you’ll see some image retention as the screen updates.

The viewing angles and the backlighting look great (no uneven lighting!).

Is it native resolution? I ask because it looks like some pixel doubling or pixel tripling is going on and the image is overly sharp - like the gaps between the pixels have disappeared.

Edit: Had a look at the FunnyPlaying and they mention the pixels being four times as large but the screen being the same size, I wonder how it works though - the gaps between the pixels aren’t the same size as the pixels themselves. Would you mind taking a macro photo of the display? Here’s my GB Micro:

Yeah it’s the funnyplaying ips v2.

I ran the 240p test suite which has a test that flickers part of the screen back and forth from black to white. The flicker stays on screen for quite a while after leaving the test screen.

Other than that there’s still some minor motion blur, a lot more typical to what you’d see on a modern display, much much better than the AGS-101 screen.

Another little thing that bugs me is the mask around the screen protector doesn’t have much of a gap, meaning there’s like a 1 or 2 pixel overscan on the sides of the screen.

So yeah it’s still not perfect but it’s a massive amount better than all the other options.

The displayed resolution is a 4x upscale (2x in each dimension). The gaps between pixels are not visible. I can understand why you would appreciate this artifact but honestly I don’t really see that at a normal play distance (roughly my arms stretched out in front of me) and the result just looks like a brighter, higher quality GBA screen that’s a bit bigger overall.

I’ll try to take a better photo of the screen itself but I don’t have a proper macro lens.

Edit:

As mentioned above and in other places the resulting screen is a bit larger than the original, maybe an extra 0.5cm diagonally.

Finally got around to doing the AGS-101 mod and of course after I bought all my stuff, an IPS panel comes out. Oh well, gotta catch em’ all right? I added the BennVenn voltage regulator to brighten it up.

Thanks for the extra info. I thought it was pixel doubled, interesting approach!

Yeah, not my cup of tea personally but I can’t deny that it looks good for what it is! Especially how even the backlighting is. Even my Vita Slim isn’t as good as that.

Does anyone know where Nintendo got the idea for the gentle curve on the face of the Game Boy Pocket from?

I had a thought that they may have lifted the idea from the 15 degree curve present on most (all?) pre-iMac 90s Macs:

Especially since later Nintendo products so blatantly borrow design cues from Apple.

Is that on all pockets? I saw it on some but thought they were warped.

All the ones I own and have ever seen.

I thought my childhood one was warped when I first noticed it.

Yeah, my Pockets also have a very gentle concave shape near the front.

Interesting about the Apple influence being a possibility, did remind me that the atomic purple GB Pocket appeared in Japan a couple of years before Apple popularised the use of translucent plastic in consumer electronics with the first iMac.

It may be that all or many warped slightly over time, due to a minor design flaw?

I don’t have any proof right now but I did notice it with one I had, but remember another did not. But could be wrong, will keep it in mind and check in the future.

Don’t think it’s a time thing since I remember it being a thing with my original pocket years and years ago that I noticed within the years after getting it.

I’ve been looking for a good storage option for my handheld cartridges for a while now. I came across an interesting idea of storing carts in DVD cases. Searching online I found a lot of different sizes and styles of cases and found some that do not have the part that holds the disc. I thought these would be perfect for holding Game Boy cartridges. It worked out pretty good for my needs. I made up some cover art to showcase the original box art of each game and then fit as many carts in each case that I could (6). My carts now sit nicely on the shelf along with my other games. I plan on doing more of these for GBA, and Game Gear sometime (putting all these together and printing them out was a lot more work than I thought)

I’ve been wanting to do something like this with my GB, GBA and Switch games. I have so many switch games now it takes up way too much shelf space. I really hate wasted storage space.

Side note, i bought a bunch of DS cases for my GBA collection to do the same thing.

This is amazing! Much better than cramming all the carts into a storage box and having to flip through them to find what you want.
