So I’ve installed the Funnyplayingv2 screen and I’m impressed.
There is some slight image retention on high contrast games such as SMB3 and Sonic Advance but it’s only noticeable if you’re looking for it. The display is great and the brightness controls weren’t too difficult to install.
I’m not completely happy for unrelated reasons as the button kit they sent me did not have a proper contact on the start button, so it presently doesn’t work. I cobbled one together using a spare SNES contact but it still only works with quite a bit of pressure on the button.
I’m waiting on a replacement now which seems absurd, but I refuse to pay for another button kit. What should have been a fun mod has been an endless exercise of opening and closing my GBA that I hate to even look at it now.
I have both the Mcwill and the bennvenn and the bennvenn is better for two reasons: the mcwill has a screen tear every few seconds and the bennvenn has better battery life. They both look great and the size isn’t that much smaller. Still, it’s smaller. That said, I wish I’d waited since he announced the bigger screen. They are pretty easy installs though so no complaints.
It’s probably a tiny bit brighter than an sp 101 screen. The default brightness is set pretty good. You can install a brightness control with the bennvenn but I didn’t bother since the default was good enough for me.
I’ve had this post in my head for a while now, I’ve been meaning to ask if you had any recommendations for exclusive GBC clear cart titles. Particularly Japan-only games.
So far I’ve only picked up Dejiko Mahjong Party (partly because it was developed by Studio Saizensen!) but there’s just so much overwhelming choice!
If you don’t have it already, the JP version of Donkey Kong Land 3 (ドンキーコングGB ディンキーコング&ディクシーコング) is a GBC clear cart and the only region where it’s in color.
There’s a rare expensive Goemon game I want, Hoshizorashi Dyamites Arawaru!!. It’s basically the only Goemon I do not have but is expensive even cart only now.
Personally my GBC faves include Crazy Bikers (great sequel to ‘Bikers’ or Motocross Maniacs), Metal Gear… not a huge GBC fan overall I guess lol. Some of the ports/colourisations were good for their time like SMB Deluxe, but the Advance was right around the corner and GBC was very much a kids system for the most part, lots of licensed junk.
Thanks for the recommendations folks. I’ll check out DK Land 3 out of curiousity, never played any of the portable ones except the GBC port of DKC.
That’s a shame a lot of the library is licensed rubbish, though not entirely surprising I guess! I haven’t revisited the GBC since it was replaced by the GBA so it’s a shame there aren’t a bunch of hidden gems out there like the original GB had.
I guess I’ll also check out Game Boy Wars 3 (Long live Hudson Soft), Enix’s Command Master and Alphadream’s first game Koto Battle (though to be honest Tomato Adventure has always interested me more). Don’t realise there was a Goemon!
Thanks for the heads-up. The only 2D games I’ve played are the three Super Famicom games and I’d always viewed the GBA ports of 1 and 2 as inferior. Not a huge fan of SNES to GBA ports. I’ll keep an eye out for the GBC game, didn’t realise Konami Kobe did one before Krazy Racers!
And thanks for reminding me the DS game exists, picked up a copy yesterday. Haven’t had time to play more than a couple of minutes but the art direction is beautiful, even the menus look the part.
Oh wow, what was the forth SFC platformer? I’m guessing a late release? I remember an early PS1 Goemon looking atrocious, at least visually.
Yeah I need to play more Goemon 3. The RPG elements make it slower for me to get into since I need to look up vocab and kanji, but one day I’m sure I’ll be faster. I’ve got 1-3 on my New 3DS, don’t think Konami released a fourth one on SFC VC which is probably why I haven’t stumbled across it yet.
Dragon Warrior Monsters is pretty excellent. It’s like Pokémon in many ways but a bit more difficult and sophisticated, with a very very deep breeding system to get new monsters.
I seem to remember there being a port of Crystalis on the GBC?
Always read good things about Harvest Moon and Legend of the River King back in the day, and Pokemon Trading Card Game is well worth a look as an offshoot RPG. Also: Alphadream’s first game was a GBC card battler title. Japan-only but no kanji so less of a barrier for interpreting the dialogue
I’m usually the first to defend non-backlit screens, especially in light of the AGS-101 screen having obnoxious issues of its own. But yeah that original screen is pretty dim. And this IPS screen looks so, so nice.
