Playdate - new handheld gaming system, with a crank

I fucking loved the presentation. The team responsible seems so down to earth and real, and they aren’t promising the moon and the stars.

They understand exactly where they fit in the market and are being completely transparent about it, while offering a genuinely new experience. No lie, I’m more excited for this system than to pick up a PS5 or Series X.

Yay!

This is a great summary, now that I reflect back on it, you really nailed it with this line. It’s great that they recognise themselves as a niche in its own space away from competing forms of entertainment.

I’m still not all that keen on the delivery mechanism for the games, which is probably the only cynical thing about the device. Unlocking games one by one is honestly there to game social media so everyone’s playing and talking about the same current game. But maybe they’ll let you just buy games to own outright in the future.

You keep the Season games once they’re unlocked. It’s just that the games unlock staggered.

That’s good! Wonder what happens if you get a PlayDate late and miss a season unfold though?

I believe you will be able to chose how to catch up, or bulk unlock.

Interestingly, Season 2 will work much better as people will already have a Playdate so things will be more in sync.

Well, what a week. Received some amazing feedback on my game on Twitter and a whole bunch of new followers.

I took a break from October 2020 to May 2021, due to the delay and Season 2 unknowns, only doing odd bits on the game and trying other prototypes. Since May I am back on it and we’re edging ever closer to completion. Dare I say 80% complete?

Today I released a small demo to the rest of the Developer Preview crowd, containing roughly the content from my teaser trailer, which I’m posting here:

Nice. The second paragraph you wrote does raise an interesting question about season 1, given the supply constraints and potential issues with manufacturing it does make you wonder how many PlayDates will have ended up in people’s hands by the time the first few games unlock.

Daily Driver still looks like the PlayDate game I’m most itching to play - nothing else in the lineup really looks like I’d still be playing it days after the game comes out, if that makes sense! Hats well and truly off for this!

Yes that all makes sense. It’ll be interesting to see how Season 1 plays out.

I’m beginning to feel like I’d actually prefer to be in Season 2 for a number of reasons.

Fingers crossed, would be awesome to see Daily Driver in season 2. Are you still going with rotating challenges tied with time-limited leaderboards, Mario Kart Wii style?

Every day one of the challenges on the map will light up as the daily challenge (whether you’ve unlocked it or not) to encourage leaderboard competition.

Oh! I’ve said too much

Brilliant! I’m looking forward to seeing the front end in the final game as well - I’m hoping the return to 400 x 240 will give us some delightfully focused menus.

I’ll stay shtum :stuck_out_tongue:

Put together a new prototype as a brief diversion from Daily Driver, to scratch an itch.

Preview articles are out.

I enjoyed this one.

Hype. I’m there day 1

THIS IS HAPPENING TODAY. HYPE.

Steam Deck, eat your heart out. Can’t wait for this. Getting all of the accessories too - the stand and the case. And the pen. THE PEN!!

Can’t wait to see all of the unique lo-fi stuff people create on this.

I don’t think I’ve been this excited for new hardware since the Switch 4 years ago.

It’s a segment of the industry that I think has been ignored ever since the 3DS has been phased out. And here we are.
