Playdate - new handheld gaming system, with a crank

Also, you can check your emails from them. The one you’re looking for is titled Playdate Owner’s Update #1 and I received it 11/11/2021. They will list the group you are in.

I guess because I ordered so late that info isn’t available on my order screen yet. Unless the Order ID is the number in which case I’m in the 41000 range and definitely the last the last group (which I expected).

I didn’t realise I’m in the second group. Which means early 2022. Pretty cool!
Never mind, I looked at the order number listed on my receipt, which is not an accurate indicator of my place in line. Group 3… let’s hope there are some cancelled orders, which could move my order up.

So they released the public beta of Pulp today.

This is their low code game dev tool for the Play date. It runs in a browser and you can even run what you develop from your browser too.

Haven’t done anything more than login yet but am keen to tinker with it and see what kinds of experiences are possible with this tool.

Cool, I’m going to play around with this. Get ready for my masterpiece (jk, all the games I’ve ever designed are garbage, but I have fun with it anyway).

Full-blown SDK is out!

Lua + C, Simulator, docs, examples.

Soon you’ll be able to try a demo of Daily Driver using the Simulator!

(currently there’s a bug in Lua(!) - that the Simulator uses - that causes it to hard crash when trying to run my game)

You can now try Daily Driver (Lua bug fixed in SDK 1.9.1)

There is a little teaser at Ars now, with a review promised for next week:

(Personally I feel like the Snapdragon 845 based Odin Pro plus the incredibly inexpensive, what-an-insane-deal Steam Deck are going to open the floodgates on handhelds once they become more widely available.)

Reviews hit tomorrow! Monday 18th.

Watch out if you want the games to remain a suprise.

No shipping info for my unit yet. But man I really am excited for people to get their devices after all this time. Very exciting!

Yea, I’m skipping reviews. Looking forward to a totally unspoiled first impression.

I can’t understand why they’ve sold out on the surprise factor — the reason is called Playdate! — for a few YouTube reviews. Such a shame this close to shipping. But maybe I’m missing something I’m not a marketer for sure.

I think more people are likely to buy if they know what games are on the system than just blindly jumping in on pure faith.

You’re absolutely right.

I’m so far in I can’t see the wood for the trees.

What order number ranges are people?

I’m in the second wave. I was refreshing the page as fast as possible when orders went live. Can’t compete with the folks who were in the first wave. Must’ve used black magic or something haha.

Hope to get mine this summer.

There’s a fan-run tracker spreadsheet that shows shipping over 1000 a day at the moment.

I’m in “group 2”, around 11,000 on the order number. Haven’t heard a peep but excited!!

I just got my Steam Deck so hopefully I’ll get my Playdate soon as the perfect counter point!

41xxx here. Not expecting it to come this year but I’m not in a rush.

What’s your impressions of the steam deck?
