RGB High Score Battle! - Week 8: Donkey Kong

Site is updated! Here’s our current week details:

WEEK 8
Game: Donkey Kong
Platform(s): Arcade
Challenge Type: High Score
Game Details: Full Game, Highest Score
When: Apr 23rd - Apr 29th, 2018

I’ve updated the website with the new game, let’s get hammering!

Good luck everyone, please submit your scores via screenshot or video by replying directly to this post!

RULES

  1. Competitions last one week, close on Sunday night @ midnight.
  2. Post screenshots in this thread as proof.
  3. The winner from the previous week chooses the next game to play.
  4. You cannot choose twice in a row. 2nd place will choose if someone wins two weeks in a row.
  5. If there’s a tie, the person that submitted the high score first gets to choose.
  6. Games must be high score compatible (think “arcade style scores” like Pac-Man, or Spy Hunter, not Super Mario).
  7. Emulation is okay (MaME is often the best for high scores).
  8. No save state manipulation (pausing to take a break is fine though).
  9. Submit scores as soon as you get them! To keep the competition rolling and fair, do not hold on until the last moment to submit.

Points will be awarded for the entrants, based on the position finished for the week. This is to encourage wider participation, and the points will be posted each week as well as on the website.

POSITION POINTS AWARDED
1st: 10 points
2nd: 7 points
3rd: 5 points
4th: 3 points
5th: 2 points
Any honest attempt: 1 point

Overall, we should keep it simple. This is just a good time, not a crazy official high score competition! Game plays should ideally be short and fun so people that can’t invest hours into this can still compete. Obviously we are working on a trust based system here, so don’t ruin it for the others!

Here’s a simple website I made to keep track of the competition.

 We love you Billy Mitchell

Friendly reminder: no using save states!

Last time I played Donkey Kong was in a bar with @Socksfelloff !

I’ll get into this. On Mame, probably, though I have half a mind to pull out my DK64 cartridge, hehehe.

Oh boy. I suuuuck at this game game for some reason but I’m looking forward to giving you all a run for your money. Good luck everyone!

Damnit I’m so in for donkey kong but I’m in Asia for the next few weeks! I’ll hit it up if I can find an arcade machine in Japan

Don’t worry, I don’t think all of us will be playing on the original arcade (and filming it to send to raskulous unedited).

btw, we’re playing the US version. There are slight differences notably in the order of the first few stages, that can affect early scoring. I like the Japanese order better, but I assumed anyone encountering an arcade in real life it would be a US one.

Doesn’t work as well on a grey background…

Here’s one for Billy, no save state required!

Given how much I have used emulators in the past, mostly 8 and 16 bit, this is my first MAME experience. With a keyboard and 10 year old laptop it’s amazing! /sarcasm haha. Nah, not that bad, ton of lag but fun to play an arcade game.

How come there’s a ton of lag?

In MAME?

Edit: I think this game sounds and plays like garbage in MAME.

I haven’t tried DK in MAME, so I’m not sure. There isn’t much input lag over real hardware though, is there? I may be mistaken, but I thought it was only 1 frame difference or something like that.

Give it a go and see what you think. I may be wrong here.

Will do once the kiddos are in bed.

Had my arcade stick set to 8 way mode instead of 4 way this entire time. Slightly improved.
