RGB Pick Up Thread Of Swag!

Man I really want that. Been trying to get a copy of every version of Puyo Puyo 2, I think I’m short 3 or 4 ports plus the arcade edition. But the arcade ban would be the best thing to have for the authenticity.

That game is a lot of fun. Been on the lookout for it myself. Congrats on the pickup!

Thanks! Weirdly, this game sat for a few days in the for sale thread over at AP before I finally made an offer. It was a great price. I was surprised someone didn’t snatch it up right away.

Picked up some more games. I was checking out the difference between the thing on ps2 and Xbox and didn’t realize how massive it would be. The

ps2 version is just straight up missing tons of wall textures.

Package came today! Snagged a PVM-5041Q monitor. It does RGB natively. This is going to make my mod work much easier! No need to hook things up to my main set up now.

Got it from a really nice guy who was a professional cinematographer. This was from his personal gear. Got a great deal on it. It’s such a small PVM! I can’t quite tell but it almost looks like the scan lines are vertical on this one.

I bought Ys VIII on Switch again, been craving exploring the Isle of Seiren for the past few weeks. At release I didn’t find time to play it much because I had played it to death on Vita, so I sold my copy. Which I regretted.

This reprint is missing the somewhat naff “Adventurers Edition” branding over the top, which may well be preferable to the first run. But I am disappointed that it no longer includes the map insert. didn’t care about the collectible cards.

Wait… I need to know more. Why are they vertical? What sort of screen is in it?

Is it still an aperture grille? Slot mask?

There’s a little info out there on this one. Not a ton. Here’s what I’ve dug up so far.

CRT type: 6-inch Trinitron Tube, visible picture size 5-inch measured diagonally, 70 degree deflection, AG pitch 0.5mm

It’s definitely still an aperture grille.

Interesting bid document there.

Here’s the series brochure.

No idea why the scanlines look vertical though. Going to have to do some more digging to see what I come up with.

I did open it up to look inside and I can say that the anode cap is still at the top of the tube so it doesn’t seem to be set in there any differently than any other CRT. What a cool little piece of equipment!

I love Ys VIII, so much so I played through all 3 console versions (Vita, Switch, and PS4).

It really is good. The cohesive level design in particular really surprised me, it justified the move to a more contemporary camera beyond just doing it for the sake of it. I loved how you could get your bearings just by looking around you, would love to see the design documents for the isle.

Playing the Trials of Mana remake made me appreciate Ys VIII even more, since it makes you realise the enemy design and animation ‘tells’ are really good. Trials of Mana’s aren’t, so that game relies on clumsy warning zones on the floor to remind you an attack is incoming, making combat feel very homogenous regardless of what you’re fighting and where.

I’m worried that Ys IX won’t be as good, the level design looks dull. And it may be more bloated content-wise. But a new locale is exciting nonetheless.

I played about 10 hours of Ys VII on Vita and enjoyed it…until the save file didn’t load anymore when I switched from internal storage to a memory card. Everything else works fine, it just hates Ys I guess. I have VIII as well but have yet to play it, heard great things though!

Yeah VIII was just one of those games where everything just clicked into place to make for an amazing experience. I’m not worried about IX, yeah there have been some reviews from people online who haven’t liked it. Those same people also seem to think that Origins and Ark are the pinnacle of the series so I figure we just don’t have the same opinion on these games. (I think Ark is easily the worst in the series, not just a bad Ys game but a bad game, and Origins just gets boring and bland)

I had a closer look into IX and the dungeon design looks great, so even if the world isn’t as compelling as the Isle of Seiren I think we’re in for a treat. And yeah, Origins is more fascinating as a history piece than as a game, though there is something to be said about the minimalism in its design from the era.

One thing I was really impressed by with Ys VIII’s original Vita release was how it had just three programmers, it still remains technically impressive today. I was happy to hear the news that Falcom is working on their own game engine rather than adopt middleware like Unreal or Unity (or continue using PhyreEngine like they are with the Kiseki games), it’ll continue to give their games a distinct look and feel I reckon, even though only enthusiasts are likely to appreciate that.

If you can get it connected to a PC and a PSP it might be worth salvaging your save and trying it on a PSP memory stick, from what I recall saves for PSP games can be transferred between the two. I remember picking up my Ys VII save on Vita back at launch.

I picked these up recently - the Raphnet adapters are fantastic, although I’ve only had a chance to test the SNES to GCN with the Game Boy Interface. The cord is really long and I sit fairly close to my PVM so I’ll probably keep it coiled up.

The SD Media Launcher works great (I’ll eventually get a GCLoader) and I’ve got Swiss set to autoboot so it’s pretty seamless, I just turn on the GC and I’m in a homebrew app. That said the adapter it comes with is a flimsy piece of shit, so I’ll probably replace that.

Speaking of the GC man am I glad I grabbed some of the Insurrection industries Carby component cables because two or three days after they were sold out everywhere and they’ve said they aren’t doing any more production runs for the foreseeable future. The build quality is great and the Game Boy Interface looks amazing on my PVM 20L2.
