The official Retro Core / Battle of the Ports thread

I’ll need your advice on where the best places to find retro games in Kyushu are pretty soon. I went to a pretty good Surugaya in Hakata the last time I was in but I’m sure there’s more.

No where if I’m to be honest. I buy only online these days. There’s a Mandrake in Kokura behind Kokura St. In the Aru Aru building. There’s also a Gamest there but both places are over priced in my opinion. As for Fukuoka City I couldn’t say. I actually live in Yamaguchi, not Kyushu. I do work in Kyushu though.

I’ll check them out if I make a stop in Kitakyushu. I don’t mind slightly elevated prices when I’m traveling. The allure of a good selection overwhelms any cost-concerns I might have.

There is a Mandrake in Fukuoka City but I don’t know where. There’s also a Mnga Sokk about 15 minutes walk from Fukuoka airport. Again, not sure where.

I totally disagree on the eight direction shooting. I much prefer the US release for its design only allowing you to shoot upwards on the screen with the standard machine gun. That sets it apart from other games and gives a good restriction on that weapon. It also makes lining up your grenade/missile shots independent of your machine gun fire a possibility. I’m guessing that’s why you found the FDS and NES versions easier.

It’s definitely something that enhances the character of this game specifically. I adored Jackal in arcades and played the hell out of it. Lots of quarters went into this one from me.

Yep, it takes away the issue overhead run and guns without twin sticks have - being unable to shoot in a different direction from the one you are facing. This innovation completely fixes the clunky feeling the genre can have, as you can actually fire at enemies while retreating.

Ninja Princess does this too, one button always shoots up.

Way back when these things fist came out I reviewed one. It was okay but nothing amazing. Now we have the all new updated version for 2019 with 2 player support. Is it any better than the original? Let’s watch on.

I wish something like this got released with good 240p output. I’d be all over it.

Jim Power was a game released under many names as a new game but in reality it was always the same game with a few changes here and there. Let’s take a look at Jim Power across a variety of systems from an 8bit UK home computer port to a Japanese exclusive console release.

lmao, why did your guy die at 10:10

Ah, because he stood on the remains of the Dead enemy. This game is kind of stupid when it comes to difficulty on the SNES version. Bloody everything kills you.

So the other day I had to spend a few days away from home. I was staying in a typical Japanese short stay hotel, sometimes known as business hotels. These are relatively inexpensive and very clean but just how big are they?

A little late this week but I think it’s worth it as we take a look at Earthworm Jim on this week’s Battle of the Ports.

I’ve been getting in to the Vasara Collection the last week. Finally I can share my views on it. The game should be available to buy soon.

This video was filmed on August 10th 2019 in Hakata City, Fukuoka prefecture. Hakata City is one of Japan’s larger cities but unlike Tokyo people here smile a lot more (^o^).
Hidden away around the city are many historical buildings which are well preserved. Let’s see if we can find some that are literally a stones throw away from the main train station.

I managed to get a pre-order for Vasara for like 5 bucks on the eShop, can’t wait for to unlock. I’ve heard good things about the series recently, but hadn’t heard of it before. Is this the first time its come to a home console?

For 5 dollars you really can’t go wrong. That’s practically free.

Earthworm Jim 2 will be covered but not just yet. Give it a month or so.

Thanks for the Vasara video :grinning:. I’m looking forward to playing them.
