Game Boy/Color/Advance OT + Collecting Thread - Get into it!

Sweet! Got any finished photos?

Nice! Which one? I’m still waiting for my BennVenn GBC kit.

I installed the McWill, since it was available. Also have a Bennvenn on preorder.

Honestly, I’m actually a little disappointed. There’s tons and tons of praise for these (they are the same screen), and it does look great, but I haven’t seen anyone mention the problem I’m having with it. Unless I installed it wrong. But I don’t think I did. Anyway, there is a screen tear every few seconds which really bothers me. I guess the panel doesn’t quite match the refresh of the original GBC and so it can’t be helped but I wish the reviewers would mention this.

I’m fairly satisfied, and haven’t used it enough to see the screen tear issues - I did read something about newer kits being fixed? Kind of annoying! What games are you playing that you saw the tearing (so I can try them out!)? @panopticblue

Anyway - system off to see the screen size difference, on w focus on seeing the actual viewing size, and on w focus on the screen.

Damn that’s nice!

I think it might have been the 0.7 litre box here, but it was definitely from this company: http://www.reallyusefulproducts.co.uk/uk/html/onlineshop/rub/b00_7litre.php

Damn… that would drive me crazy. Reminds me of the stutter with the software on the Game Boy Player disc for Gamecube that happened every few frames. It used to drive me up the wall.

Yes, via horribly outdated emulators.

Ah, damn, oh well.

I mean, if you want emulators, you could buy a cheap chinese handeld. The ARM7 17MHz from 2001 hasn’t got the horspower for a satisfying emulation, IMHO.

Oh really? Ok. Emulators aren’t going to be the focus for me when it comes to getting an Everdrive but it sounds nice still.

As much as I love my GBA SP I’m thinking about installing the freckleshack screen mod into my GBC just because I love the ergonomics of that system.

Been playing a lot of yugioh on my gba sp 101. I was thinking about reshelling it and then I knocked it off my dresser and the shell shattered. Luckily everything seems to still be working fine. I was able to piece it back together but now I just need to find a quality shell.

I went through a couple and they all seem identical. My advice would be to stick with the OEM buttons and pads, that’s really where the aftermarket shells suffer. You’ll also need some fine grit sandpaper to smooth off some of the rough edges around the seams.

Got my back light GBC kit from BennVenn. Finished it up today. Works pretty great.

Was watching retro future and apparently their are now transparent GBA SP cases released. Thinking about getting Smoke Grey or my favorite GBC color Atomic Purple.

Bought a for-parts micro that seemed like it was in fantastic condition. Figured it had a dead battery. Turns out the inside looks like it was dunked in salt water for a few days. Also, as usual, the micro screws strip extremely easily. As cool as I think this console is, they’re such a colossal pain in the ass to deal with. Pretty annoyed with myself for taking the risk on it, but live and learn. Maybe I’ll find a use for it.

Hopefully you didn’t dump too much cash on it. :frowning: I’ve been rolling the dice on similar Game Boy stuff. I found a disgusting looking AGS-101 at a local flea market and was able to haggle it down to $10. Got home and it cleaned up nicely. I have a “for parts” GBC arriving tomorrow that I’m optimistic I’ll be able to fix. For $5 it will be a fun learning experience at the very least.

Are the triwing screws there smaller than the typical triwings in GBC/GBA consoles?

I found the screws in the switch joycon to be a bear to deal with due to that and ended up buying a set of licenced microstix triwing screwdrivers (along with other screwdrivers) off amazon japan for future stupidly small triwing screws. I think there are other sources for nice quality Y00 screwdrivers, of course.

Spent 80$. So not nothing, but decidedly less than comparable quality (working) micros go for these days. More just annoyed with myself for not noticing the rust.

They’re different from the GBC screws. Can’t speak to the GBA ones since it’s been ages since i tinkered with one of those. on the GBM, they’re significantly smaller, and instead of having a rounded top (and thus the Y shape has quite a bit of material surrounding it), they’re inset in to an already very small screw. Compound this with the fact the metal used is exceptionally soft, they strip very easily. One of the screws in particular seems to be prone to binding up, since both my functional micro and this one have had that screw be essentially impossible to remove. At this point I’ll need to take a dremel to it.
