I guess microstix allow for smaller screws and the head is designed to work with that by preventing cam-out among other things but you looks like you really need to have the right screwdriver/bit.
Well, I got lucky and the gamble paid off this time. The for-parts GBC was indeed not turning on when it arrived today. After a thorough cleaning of the battery contacts, power switch, silicone pads, and PCB, it ran like a champ.
Just need a yellow unit now to complete my GBC rainbow.

it’s not an issue of screwdriver, i have one that fits perfectly. it’s an issue of material and construction. unfortunately.
Did you notice any screen tearing?
I remember reading about some other issues with a couple of games and this new screen everyone is using I wonder if it’s been resolved.
There’s a new IPS screen being used for GBA mods:
It’s stated as ‘no blur’ so I guess it’s similar to those LG screens being used in these new GBC mods. It does have one issue where people are seeing diagonal tearing but BennVenn is looking into a fix.
I haven’t noticed any tearing. I think Benn fixed all the board issues on the later runs, I haven’t had any issues.

Just got a brand new Game Boy Color for fairly cheap. This may be placebo, but the screen appears a touch sharper than another unit I have that has been played for decades. It’s not very noticeable unless they’re side by side.
But can LCD screens get less sharp over time?
Maybe it’s a loss of sharpness due to micro-scratches on the surface of the screen cover on the well-used one.

I have no experience with either but I’m pretty sure Bennvenn is about to start selling a new LCD that is the exact same size as the original.

I don’t think he’s elaborated much since the announcement but it was enough to make me wait to see how it pans out. I already find the original GBC screen a little small so I was never happy with a smaller option.
Yeah agreed. Would be nice to find a mod that makes it much larger, but with a correct pixel rato.
Just original GB size, screen wise, honestly. That’s the size the games were designed around.
In fact I’d love some kind of long shot ‘put a GBC in a DMG shell’ mod lol. Love the DMG.
That would be awesome… And I have a broken DMG lying around. I bet it could be done without to much difficulty.
The larger form factor of the DMG is just great to hold and play on.

On the other hand I went back to an unmodded one, no backlight. The original screen is just great to look at in good light.
I found a couple videos on modding a GBA SP into a DMG shell, but I’m really not a fan of the idea. You have to modify the cart slot to fit a GBA cart, and there’s no real elegant way to include the shoulder buttons.
Yeah the GBA ones look dumb. And you get the tiny GBC screen in the middle.
My perfect GB would be a full size DMG screen, but backlit, colour, and Game Boy Color game support. The power switch blocker would obviously be removed.
Anyway, probably a very specific ideal
